We are not going to discuss the number of milk-infused chocolate-chip cookies I have consumed tonight.

Actually, when I refer to them as milk-infused chocolate-chip cookies, they sound really awesome, almost like a cookie I created to simulate the experience of having cookies and milk, instead of like a cookie created when I had to add milk to my dough to make it stick together.

Wait, the last one is really interesting, because “unscented” and “fragrance free” actually mean different things—I know this because my mother is allergic to scents (like, perfume makes it hard for her to breathe, and scented soaps/shampoos/etc. irritate her skin), and I’m pretty sure fragrance free things are okay for her, but unscented things aren’t always okay. For my birthday, my parents got me a gift card to the Harvard Book Store, and, being the very intelligent person that I am, I immediately put it in my wallet so that it would be on hand if I went to the store and to keep myself from losing it.

The catch is that I put it in one of the card pockets in my wallet that I literally never use, my reasoning being that that particular card pocket was empty, and I didn’t want to push the capacity of the other pockets. I’m pretty sure that when I made this decision, I realized that I would have to work pretty hard to remember that the card was in the pocket, but I assumed I would figure it out pretty quickly.

Today I decided I want to buy a particular book, so I went to check for the card in my wallet while I was at work, and of course I didn’t find it because why would I ever put a gift card in a pocket I never use? Why not put it in the pocket with the other gift cards?

So I came home pretty thoroughly convinced that I had accidentally thrown away the gift card while packing. I went up to my room to find that I still had the birthday card my parents had given me with the gift card, which confused me to no end since I was relatively sure that I must’ve recycled the card inside its envelope with the gift card.

And then I decided to take my wallet out one more time and check every single pocket, and as soon as I thought to myself that I should check every single pocket, I remembered where the card actually was.

The moral of the story is: make everything as easy as possible because the cognitive energy spent on remembering that you put a gift card in a pocket of your wallet that you never check is NOT WORTH IT.

I am not spending another summer doing data entry and video coding when I could’ve done the same thing at my regular office for 15-20% more per hour than I’m making now. Yes, EdLabs is wonderful; that’s why I’m working there. I love the people and the environment. But I am there to be a meaningful part of what makes it awesome, not to type in numbers for other people to write about.

So I’m going to mention to someone that I’m kind of disappointed, and I’m going to try to find every single article that has ever come out of EdLabs, and I’m going to try to figure out exactly what data they have and to frame a research question, because goddammit, I am going to make this summer interesting if it kills me.
